Historic Driving Tour
Macon County is home to a variety of historic home, churches and other structures of historic significance and a driving tour is the perfect way to see them in a short amount of time.
This self-guided driving tour is an excellent way to see the many historic homes and churches spared during the Civil War. Buildings date from the mid-1800s and include 31 sites through Oglethorpe, Marshallville and Montezuma.
The Historic Driving Tour is divided into three segments. The first portion of the tour covers the city of Oglethorpe, the second Montezuma and the third portion of the tour is in Marshallville.
In Oglethorpe Cemetery lies Tom Lloyd, who murdered a judge and is buried under an unmarked tombstone. His stone is placed perpendicular to the other stones in the cemetery, indicating his belief that he should be buried as he lived, "crossways with the world." Along the tour in Montezuma is the Macon County Historical Museum, which houses a model railroad and numerous artifacts. In Marshallville, you can visit the John Donald Wade house, which was moved by several teams of mules in 1928.
