The Macon County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Operator to work at the Road Department in Oglethorpe, Georgia.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

      JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to assist in road and infrastructure maintenance activities.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Operates heavy earth-moving equipment such as motor graders, bull dozers, backhoes and front end loaders to perform road maintenance activities such as installing pipes, clearing roads, grading dirt, building ditches, clipping shoulders, widening right of ways, and priming roads for paving.
  • Operates light equipment to assist in removing debris, installing signs, and other maintenance activities as needed.
  • Performs regular inspections and maintenance on assigned heavy equipment such as checking fluids, replacing hoses, etc.
  • Assists in flagging traffic.
  • Performs related duties.

              KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads  and pipes.
  • Knowledge of related heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety laws and requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant local, state and federal traffic laws.
  • Skill in the operation of vehicles and related repair and maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in accurately maneuvering heavy equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Roads and Bridges Superintendent assigns work in terms of terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

        GUIDELINES

Guidelines include County policies and procedures, related federal, state and local laws, and related safety standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

            COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related heavy equipment operation and maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment to support road and infrastructure maintenance activities. Success in this position helps ensure safe and serviceable County roads.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other County employees, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services or to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of colors, and utilizes sense of smell.
  • The work exposes the employee to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemical, the outdoors and occasional inclement weather.  Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

       MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS                                          

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
