With the predicted demise of newspapers in big cities, the free press is alive and well in Macon County and other small communities across America, thanks to the editors of thousands of weeklies who continue to tell it like it is and report the news important to the people who live in their communities.
Macon County is served by two local media outlets, the Citizen Georgian newspaper and WMNZ 1050 AM in Montezuma, The Citizen Georgian has been serving Macon County since 1870.
In the United States, some 7,500 community newspapers -- papers with under 30,000 in circulation -- still hit the streets, front porches, and mailboxes at least once a week. A 2010 survey conducted by the University of Missouri, Columbia for the National Newspaper Association produced some enviable statistics: More than three-quarters of respondents said they read most or all of a local newspaper every week.
