Deputy Sheriff

The Macon County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications for a Deputy Sheriff to work at the Macon County Sheriff's Office in Oglethorpe, Georgia. Applications taken until filled.                                         

This position is responsible for the enforcement of local, state and federal laws in the service of public safety.

Major Duties: Patrols the County to detect and deter crime; Responds to calls including emergency situations, traffic accidents, robberies, domestic disturbances, etc.; Enforces traffic laws by detecting speeds, intoxication, and issuing citations; Provides backup and assistance to other officers; Writes detailed reports and maintains accurate paperwork for investigations and prosecutions; submits reports to appropriate agencies; Assists in gathering evidence and prepares information for court cases and testifies as needed; Serves warrants and other civil documents; Transports all state and local inmates as well as mentally ill patients to specified locations; Provides courtroom security and protection to inmates at locations as needed; Provides funeral escorts; Performs related duties.

Knowledge required by this position: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws; Knowledge of criminal investigation methods, practices and equipment; Knowledge of criminal justice system and court procedures; Knowledge of self defense mechanisms and general safety techniques; Knowledge of computers and job related software programs; Skill in the use of firearms, communications equipment, traffic equipment, and other standard and specialized equipment; Skill in interview techniques; Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions; Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports; Skill in oral and written communications. 

Applicant must be 21 years of age and must be POST Certified by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia. Applicant must also have a valid driver’s license. Applicant will be required to pass a physical examination, drug and alcohol test, polygraph test and a criminal background check.
