The Public Works Department consists of Roads and Bridges and the Macon County Maintenance Department which maintains and repairs county vehicles and equipment.

The men and women of this department work hard to ensure that Macon County residents and visitors to the county have safe roadways to travel. The duties of the department include, but are not limited to: grading roads, right-of-way mowing and brush cutting, culvert installation, drainage ditch maintenance, tree trimming, shoulder construction and repair, street signage, pothole patching.

The Public Works Department also provides assistance to Whitewater Creek Park, the Recreation Department, the County Courthouse, and other county offices as needed.

The department utilizes a detail from the Department of Corrections to cut bushes from bridges, perform litter pick up, maintain grass at different county buildings and perform duties as needed.

Department personnel also respond to emergencies of natural and man-made disasters by removing roadway debris, clearing trees off road and closing and barricading roads which have been determined to pose a danger to drivers.
